“We were so focused on winning these duals,” Lions coach Mike Bluhm said. “We figured we had to wrestle well, but if we did, it was within reach.”

The Lions never gave up more than 21 points in any of their five victories on the day, and had too much for the defending champion Warriors in the final.

“It’s tough when you’re giving up three forfeits to a real tough team,” Elk Lake coach Bob Hegedty said. “Overall, we wrestled pretty well.”

They just did not have enough to beat the Lions, starting with Johnson, who reversed Derek Noldy with 15 seconds left in regulation, then took down Noldy in overtime for an 8-6 decision.

“That was probably the match of the whole tournament,” Bluhm said. “The momentum is starting to build here, but we have some big schools coming up.”

Chris Carpenter (103), Jon Lynn (119), Dan Frost (135) and Chad Johnson (140) all had pins in the final for Lackawanna Trail, which shares the Lackawanna 1 division lead with Delaware Valley.

Rich Harvey (152) had the lone pin for Elk Lake.

Both the Lions and Warriors won their pools with 4-0 records. Williamson beat Palmerton for third; GAR downed Perkiomen Valley for fifth; Blue Ridge topped Susquehanna, 45-36, for seventh; and Nanticoke beat Sayre for ninth.
